Everything ready for the start of the I Bizkaia Silver Week

With just a short while to go until 1 October and the International Day of Older Persons, it cannot be overlooked that Europe is at the fore of an unprecedented demographic change due to the increase in life expectancy (driven by technological and scientific progress).

Precisely, Bizkaia has organised the I Bizkaia Silver Week to be held in Bilbao/Bizkaia to mark that date. The event will be attended by many international researchers and experts on demographic change, along with political representatives (European, national, local) and other economic and social stakeholders involved in improving knowledge about healthy and active ageing.

The forum will host numerous activities that include workshops, talks, lectures, plenary sessions and practical examples on the advances in information technologies focused on improving the quality of life of older persons. Finally, the programme includes other proposals that, as complementary activities, will allow citizens of Bizkaia and visitors alike to learn about the healthy and active ageing practices of the Province and of other parts of the world.

The first of the Bizkaia Silver Week activities is AAL Hackaton, (Hack4elder advantAGE), which will be run at Bilbao’s Euskaduna Conference Centre and starts on Saturday 22 September. It is a competition organised by Deusto University in collaboration with Bizkaia Provincial Council.

Around 50 hackers or experts from around the world will there develop (technological and non-technological) solutions in the form of services, products and new business models aimed at improving the quality of life of older persons. It will be a multidisciplinary, intergenerational and creative event, where young and old will work together for 30 hours non-stop.

AAL Forum, pièce de rèsistance

The pièce de résistance of the I Bizkaia Silver Week will be the 10th AAL Forum 2018 and is also being held at the Euskalduna Conference Centre in Bilbao. This European congress is the main European event dedicated to the field of active and assisted living for older persons and whose aim is to provide examples and proposals for healthy ageing by using new technologies.

This international congress, which will be held at Bilbao’s Euskalduna Conference Centre, is co-organised by the AAL Association, the promoter and manager of the European “AAL (Active and Assisted Living) I+D Programme, co-funded by the European Commission and Bizkaia Provincial Council, in collaboration with Tecnalia.

The Nagusi International Conference is scheduled for 26 September and its venue is the Bizkaia Aretoa at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). It is an Open Day, organised by the Provincial authority in collaboration with the University of the Basque Country, where the stakeholders involved in ageing policies locally and in Europe, will share their perspectives of the new demographic scenario.

That same day, on 26 September, the General Assembly of the European Covenant on Demographic Change is likewise scheduled and will also be held the Bizkaia Aretoa at the UPV/EHU. The event will bring together different authorities (local, regional, national, state and European) committed to preparing and implementing action plans to achieve responses for an ageing society.

Finally, the 2nd International Seminar on the Active Ageing Index (AAI), which will also be at the Bizkaia Aretoa of the UPV/EHU, is scheduled for Thursday 27 and Friday 28 September.

This international seminar organised by the UNECE, the European Commission, the University of the Basque Country and Oxford University’s Institute of Population Ageing, with the support of Bizkaia Provincial Council, will attract different stakeholders from academia, civil society and from the field of public policy. In a multidisciplinary context, they will reflect on active ageing challenges and the best public policies currently being implemented in Europe.
